Spirit Fridays!

We are continuing to have our Spirit Days on Fridays. Staff and students are encouraged to wear college gear, Prairie View (or other MSD gear), or Seahawks gear. Each week, the primary and intermediate class that has the most participation will earn an additional recess.

We are willing to collect any of that gear from parents if they are no longer wearing it. It would be provided for students who do not have anything to wear on our Spirit Days. If you have anything that you would like to donate, please drop it off in the front office.

All Day Kindergarten Lottery Registration Window March 1-31, 2017

Next year Prairie View will join all Mead School District elementary schools and offer all-day kindergarten. The initial enrollment window for ALL students eligible to enter Kindergarten in the Fall of 2017 is March 1-31, 2017. Priority placement will be given to students with a sibling currently attending Prairie View. All others will be included in the April 12 Kindergarten Lottery.

A “Master Kindergarten List” for the 2017-2018 school year will be created using the following criteria:

-Qualified Special Education students will receive first consideration.
-Sibling registrations received March 1-31 will be placed in the order received.
-Non-sibling registrations received March 1-31 will be entered in the April 12, 2017, lottery and placed in the order names are drawn.
-ALL registrations received after March 31, 2017, will be placed on the Master Kindergarten List in the order they are received.

While attendance is not required, if you would like to attend, the lottery drawing will take place at 6 pm on April 12 in the Prairie View cafeteria. Doors will open at 5:30 pm.

Additional information can be found here: Prairie View Kindergarten Registration 2017-2018 School Year.

New Student Enrollment Information can be found here.

Note: Prairie View will be open extended hours on March 1st (8 am – 6 pm) to accept kindergarten registrations.

Compliance: To be considered “in compliance” by the state, all public school districts must offer kindergarten as an “all day” program starting in the fall of 2017.

Finding approximately 10 classrooms for the Mead School District to meet this state mandate has been challenging. The District’s enrollment continues to grow . . . 190 this year with an increase of 900 students in the past 10 years. Prairie View and Midway are our fastest growing communities. At those two locations we are purchasing portable classrooms to provide extra space. At other schools we have creatively rolled-up our sleeves to find the needed classrooms. At some locations, smaller support programs will now share a room and at others we are looking to convert common areas into specialist teaching spaces to free up classrooms.

An ideal elementary school has 500-550 students. At this time our elementary schools have enrollment ranging from 506-644.

February PTO Meeting on 2/13 at 6:30 PM

Please join us at the February PTO Meeting (Monday, February 13th at 6:30 PM in the Library – childcare is FREE for all preschool age children and older)!

It’s Get Fit February Month! Mr. Wiser will be presenting Prairie View’s Health and Fitness program, along with plans for World Cup 2018. Master Kim from Jung Kim’s Martial Arts will be presenting information for after school Taekwondo at Prairie View. Prairie View Staff Appreciation, Scholastic Book Fair and plans for our PV Dr. Seuss’ Wild and Wacky Reading Week will also be discussed. Additionally, we will also be voting on the following grant requests:

Library (Rachel Peters) – $3,500.00: The purpose of this expense is to purchase six ipad minis 4s to be used both in the kindergarten rooms and for all students involved in Project Lead the Way. Reasoning: Currently one of our second grade classes is using a PTO-purchased Chrome Cart purchased during the 2013-2014 school year (Samsung Notebooks model XE303C12). Approximately ¼ of the computers on this cart currently do not work, and the others are having serious problems that negatively impact their use due to age and use. While relatively inexpensive, Chromebooks are made to last less than half of the life of a regular computer. The kindergarten teachers have generously shared their new Chrome cart with this class, but this is not a sustainable long-term solution as both need (2nd grade) daily or frequent (K) access to the internet. The purchase would directly enhance learning for PV students in the following ways:

• All Mead students take standardized tests on computers or ipads beginning in Grade K for FAST (reading).
• All Mead Chromebooks require the user to login before using any of its features.
• All Mead students are given Mead and are required to log in using their district issued user ID and password
• Mead student user ids all include 16 or more symbols including the @ sign as well as 8 letter and number combination passwords
• Many kindergarteners come to school not knowing their letters and numbers; even more have not used a keyboard
• Mead ipads are used without logging in making it much simpler for kindergarten students work on
• The reading and math progress monitoring program that Mead uses (FAST) for its youngest students is fully compatible with ipads
• The addition of six ipad minis brings PVs ipad set up to 21, enough for one entire Kindergarten class to use one-on-one

Math is Cool Club (Celeste Simone) – $440.00: We would like to order Math Is Cool shirts for the kids who are going to the MIC competition in March. We would be using designs by the kids on the front, and a quote on the back. The shirts will be approximately $10 each for approximately 44 students.

Summer Reading Club (Susan Bell) – $425.00: The adoption of a summer reading club for 20 identified kindergarteners and first graders, with the goal of helping these emergent readers review reading skills learned in the spring and preview skill needed in the fall.

Thank you for your continued support of Prairie View PTO! We are able to do great things for our Prairie View students and staff due to your generous support!
