Read more from Mead School District:

We are excited about this transition for several reasons. It will provide a unique opportunity to pilot, with a small number of students, the 6-8 grade Middle School Model the district plans to move to in the future. Additionally, moving 6th grade to Northwood will provide space at Prairie View for approximately 100 students. This will significantly reduce and/or eliminate the need to shuttle overflow 1st-5th grade students off of the prairie to other district elementary schools.

Information shared at the April 14 meeting included:
-6th grade students will be housed in the portable classrooms located on the NW portion of the Northwood campus. This area will be fenced.
-Students will follow the middle school schedule. School will start at 8:15 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.
-The 6th grade class will operate as their own mini-school . . . they will not be integrated into 7th and 8th grade classes. A draft/sample daily schedule is included in the linked PowerPoint presentation. The first hour of the day will be used to accommodate band, orchestra, choir, music, physical education and technology/library. The remainder of the day will consist of two 135-minute instructional blocks and lunch.
-6th graders will have their own lunch period separate from 7th and 8th graders.
-Students will return to Prairie View for after school sports.
-Dr. Kevin Peterson will oversee the 6th grade program at Northwood. He can be contacted at [email protected] with questions, which will be shared with Superintendent Rockefeller and the school board.

Other items discussed included:
-Transportation & Bus Safety
-General Security/Safety
-Drop-Off & Pick-Up
-Auxiliary Services such as Special Education Services
-Advanced Math

Mark Your Calendars: There will be a second, follow-up meeting with parents on Tuesday, May 3rd starting at 7 p.m. in the Northwood Library where we plan to introduce the 6th grade teachers, provide additional information and answer questions.

The Mead School Board meeting is this coming Monday, April 25, 2016 at 6 PM at the District Office (2323 E. Farwell Rd., Mead, WA 99021).
